Working Together to Improve Adult Literacy

Local partners joined the Mayor to explore how improving adult literacy can open up more job opportunities and support residents

Mayor of Greater Lincolnshire, Dame Andrea Jenkyns DBE, recently brought together education and industry leaders for a roundtable event focused on shaping a new approach to adult literacy across Lincolnshire.

Representatives from the GLCCA, colleges, universities, local businesses and private skills providers joined the discussion at Lincolnshire Showground - Home of the LAS.

Across England, research shows an estimated 8.5 million adults have low literacy or numeracy skills, affecting their ability to find work, progress in their careers and reach their full potential.

Mayor Dame Andrea said:

“This isn’t just about reading and writing in the traditional sense. This programme is directly linked to workplace and economic outcomes. We are building a bridge between education and employment to help people get jobs, stay in jobs, and truly get on in life.

“It was fantastic to see such a high level of engagement from our local partners. We brought together a powerful mix of voices.

“During the session, we took a deep dive into the real‑world barriers to learning that many face. By identifying these obstacles, we can create a pathway that offers a genuine ‘second chance’ for adults to realise their talents and contribute to our local economy.

“We are committed to creating a system where everyone has the tools they need to succeed.”

This work is part of our wider mission to create opportunities, strengthen communities and support residents to build brighter futures. More updates will follow as the programme develops.
