Greater Lincolnshire Mayor signs UK Steel Charter at Scunthorpe
Alongside signing the UK Steel Charter, Mayor Dame Andrea also endorsed the Save Steel, Buy British campaign
The Mayor of Greater Lincolnshire, Dame Andrea Jenkyns, signed the UK Steel Charter at British Steel’s Scunthorpe site on Friday 1 May, signalling support for the role of UK-made steel in public infrastructure projects across the area.
In addition to signing the Steel Charter, Mayor Jenkyns also endorsed the Save Steel Buy British campaign – a joint initiative by British Steel and the Community trade union calling on UK industry to back British steelmakers and use home-made steel.
Mayor of Greater Lincolnshire, Dame Andrea Jenkyns, said: " Iwas proud to sign both the UK Steel Charter and the British Steel Charter today, marking a significant milestone for our regional economy and the future of British manufacturing. As Mayor of Greater Lincolnshire, I am fully committed to supporting our vital steel industry and the thousands of high-skilled jobs it provides across our county. By signing these charters, we are ensuring that UK made steel is at the heart of our infrastructure projects and our long term growth strategy."
The signing marked a step by the Greater Lincolnshire Combined County Authority (GLCCA) to support the local steel sector and improve opportunities for UK producers to compete fairly for publicly funded work.
The UK Steel Charter is a voluntary, sector-led initiative that promotes best practice in procurement, helping steelmakers gain earlier visibility of major projects.
Gareth Stace, Director General of UK Steel, said: “Today’s commitment from Mayor Jenkyns sends a powerful signal that backing British
made steel means backing British jobs, growth and resilience. Public procurement is one of the strongest levers we have to support our industry, and by signing the UK Steel Charter, Greater Lincolnshire is showing real leadership in putting UK steel at the heart of its infrastructure plans.”
The event highlighted the continuing importance of British Steel’s Scunthorpe site to employment, skills and industry in Greater Lincolnshire.
