Greater Lincolnshire signs landmark agreement with Taiwan city of Tainan
The MOU promotes friendship, mutual understanding, economic development, innovation exchange and shared prosperity between Greater Lincolnshire and Tainan.
Global trade links between Greater Lincolnshire and Taiwan have been bolstered with the signing of a landmark new agreement.
Mayor of Greater Lincolnshire Dame Andrea Jenkins formally signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Tainan City Mayor Huang Wei-chei in an online ceremony held on Monday (19 October 2026).
Tainan is a major historic city of almost two million people in southern Taiwan which, like Greater Lincolnshire, is known for its innovations in food production, agri-tech and advanced manufacturing. It is Taiwan's oldest city and a former capital, known for its rich culture and historic temples.
This is key to Taiwan's globally significant semiconductor industry and boasts a range of 'smart city' technologies. Despite its global importance, this is the first time that Tainan has developed a partnership agreement with any part of the UK.
The MOU promotes friendship, mutual understanding, economic development, innovation exchange and shared prosperity between Greater Lincolnshire and Tainan. It also emphasises opportunities for collaboration in priority growth industries in which both places have clear strengths, particularly innovations in agricultural automation and robotics, AI and digital technologies, and commercialisation of new agri-tech solutions.
Greater Lincolnshire Combined County Authority works to support economic growth, increase productivity, promote innovation, strengthen international partnerships and attract inward investment to Greater Lincolnshire.
The signing of the MOU follows relationship building visits in the UK and Taiwan. A trade delegation from Taiwan attended the Great Exhibition in Lincolnshire in October 2025. In March, Mayor Dame Andrea led a delegation of innovative agri-tech researchers and businesses from Greater Lincolnshire on a visit to Tainan, and later met with Taiwan's President Han Kuo-yu in London. The MOU (known as a Sister Municipality Agreement) has now been formally signed between the mayors of Greater Lincolnshire and Tainan City.
